The setting

Heacham2.jpg

Britannia Cottage is located in a quiet part of Heacham. Church Lane is a picturesque residential area with a number of old cottages and houses - originally part of the Heacham Hall Estate. The Church of St Mary the Virgin dates from 1230 and the beautiful sight of the doves in the tower can be seen from the cottage garden.

A 5 minute walk away you have Tesco Express - open til 11pm. The High Street has a number of shops including a Post Office, bakers, beautician, library, an Indian and Fish & Chips, Medivet and nearby are Silk Road Chinese Takeaway and 3 pubs - The Bushel and Strike, Fox & Hounds and The West Norfolk. The wonderful beaches of Heacham North & South are approx 1-2miles away with more cafes and Fish and Chips - you can walk to the beaches from near Church Lane down a footpath off Hunstanton Road.

And the history!

Heacham also has interesting historic ties to Pocahontas who married John Rolfe of Heacham Hall in 1614 in Jamestown, Virginia. John brought his wife Rebecca (Pocahontas) and their son, Thomas, to visit his family at Heacham Hall in 1616.

Britannia Cottage also has an interesting history. Originally the site of single storey whitewashed cottages, in 1763 they were developed into 2 storey cottages with the impressive tudor stack chimneys. The cottages were modernised in 1913 but the first residents were soldiers who came to stem the German invasion and Zeppelin raids in the 1914-18 war.
